Corporate Team Building with a Gaming Twist in Auckland

Corporate Team Building with a Gaming Twist in Auckland

Let's be honest — most corporate team building activities get forgotten the moment people get back to their desks. The trust falls, the trivia nights, the "escape rooms that were a bit too easy." They're fine, but they're forgettable.

Gaming doesn't work that way. A competitive gaming activation creates genuine moments — the last-second race win, the surprise champion on the leaderboard, the colleague you've never seen light up before absolutely dominating on the sim rig. Those stories circulate. They become part of the team's shared language.

Ping Zero has been delivering corporate gaming events across Auckland and New Zealand since 2002. Here's why it works, what we offer, and how to make it happen for your team.

Why Gaming Works for Corporate Team Building

Traditional team building often struggles with two problems: low engagement and the "forced fun" feeling. People know it's mandatory. The activities feel disconnected from who they actually are.

Gaming solves both. It's voluntary in spirit — people lean into it because they want to compete, or watch, or cheer. And unlike many team building formats, gaming is genuinely inclusive across age, fitness level, and personality type. The quiet analyst often turns out to be a sim racing prodigy. The account director who never talks about gaming comes out on top of the leaderboard. The playing field levels in ways that reveal people differently.

From what we've seen across corporate events in Auckland, the social dynamic after a well-run gaming activation is noticeably warmer. Shared competitive experiences — especially when they're fun and professionally run — accelerate the social trust that takes months to build in a standard office environment.

Our Corporate Gaming Formats

We're not a one-format operation. Depending on your team size, venue, and objectives, we configure the right mix of hardware and activation style.

Sim Racing (Competitive, Time Trial, Leaderboard-Driven)

Our sim racing rigs are the centrepiece of high-energy corporate activations. Available as single-screen or premium triple-screen setups, they support a range of formats:

  • GT and formula-style time trials — fastest lap wins, leaderboard updates live
  • V8 Supercars and touring car racing — accessible for non-gamers, deeply engaging for enthusiasts
  • Drifting — crowd-pleasing and visually spectacular
  • Competitive racing — head-to-head, bracket-style tournaments

The live digital leaderboard is a game-changer. As participants complete runs, their times publish instantly. It creates an ambient competitive tension across the whole event — even people waiting for their turn are tracking the standings.

Just Dance Areas (High-Throughput, Inclusive)

Just Dance runs 6 players every 3–4 minutes and generates enormous crowd energy. It's the format that gets the people who "don't really play games" straight onto the floor — and usually in front of everyone. It's high-throughput, inclusive, and works brilliantly alongside sim racing as a second activation zone.

For larger events (100+ attendees), Just Dance areas handle volume efficiently while the sim rigs handle the premium competitive experience.

Multiplayer Gaming (Xbox, Co-op and Competitive)

Our Gaming Van and trailer carry full Xbox Series X setups with a 30+ game library. Multiplayer gaming works well for smaller corporate gatherings — team lunches, department events, offsites — where you want something interactive but not necessarily a structured tournament. Groups can drop in, play a few rounds, rotate out. The Game Coach manages the session flow.

What Comes With Every Activation

What separates Ping Zero from a standard AV hire is the full-service delivery model. Every corporate activation includes:

Certified Game Coach on-site. Not a casual operator — a trained facilitator who manages the session, keeps energy high, runs the tournament format, and handles any technical issues invisibly. You don't need to babysit the tech.

Branded environment. We work with your brand assets to create a custom gaming environment — branded screens, leaderboard overlays, event signage, and stage presence that looks like it was designed for the occasion. Not generic. Yours.

Turnkey execution. Concept to pack-down. We handle logistics, setup, operation, and the full run sheet. Your team just shows up.

Digital leaderboard with live scoring (PC events). For PC-based activations — sim racing, time trials, Blazepod reflex challenges — we run a live branded leaderboard that tracks results in real time. It drives repeat play, creates competitive tension, and gives the event a narrative arc from first session to final standings.

Activations We've Delivered

RocketWerkz — "Out of the Gutter", Auckland Pride Festival Closing Party Auckland game development studio RocketWerkz brought us in to deliver the entertainment at "Out of the Gutter" — the closing party of the 2026 Auckland Pride Festival at Myers Park. Free, all-ages, public event. We set up our Just Dance zone outdoors: LED dance floor, large LED screen, JBL speakers under a marquee tent. Just Dance outdoors in a park at dusk, with a crowd that absolutely came ready to move — it's the format at its best. RocketWerkz are long-term partners, and the reason they keep coming back is the same reason the invoice gets paid within the hour: the experience delivers every time.

Momentum — Corporate Client Evening, Auckland Ferry Building Momentum brought their clients together for an evening function and wanted an activity that would get people engaged without feeling forced. We set up two sim racing rigs in the room with a live Momentum-branded leaderboard between them — best lap format, 10 positions, updated in real time. Guests competed for fastest lap, the leaderboard did the work of creating conversation and friendly rivalry, and the whole setup looked the part in the venue. The Ferry Building's Level 2 lift made load-in interesting, but that's what 20 years of event logistics experience is for.

Spark Game Arena Live — Spark Arena, Auckland (September 2024) New Zealand's largest gaming festival. Around 8,000 attendees across two sessions. Ping Zero ran multiple activations simultaneously: we built the NACON/RIG exhibition stand, delivered Just Dance for Spark, and ran PC gaming, Street Fighter on the big screen, and sim racing — all for Red Bull. A full day, multiple brands, multiple formats, one crew.

Chorus NZ — "Internet Café of Now", Newmarket (May 2025) For Chorus NZ's Big Fibre Boost celebration — a free, 3-day public pop-up at 242 Broadway, Newmarket — we delivered all technical infrastructure and interactive elements across the space. This meant all screens and monitors (including the large feature screen), a retro iMac photo booth, PS2 multiplayer stations, and a 1v1 esports stage featuring e-black competing in FIFA for a few hours each day. What made this one different was the engineering depth required: we sourced, serviced, and updated retro hardware going back 25 years, solved legacy connectivity problems (USB and Firewire peripherals running reliably in a modern environment), and used a central PC to distribute content to multiple machines simultaneously — all while keeping the space looking clean and cable-free. Contracted by Supreme Group alongside Forge Production Services.

How to Book a Corporate Gaming Event

Every corporate activation is different — team size, venue, objectives, brand requirements. We don't quote until we understand what you're working with.

Here's the process:

  1. Get in touch — tell us your date, expected attendance, and event type via our contact form or email events@pingzero.co.nz
  2. Scoping call — we ask the right questions (venue access, power, format preferences, brand assets) and confirm the best configuration
  3. Proposal — we send a detailed proposal with equipment list, format outline, and pricing
  4. Confirm and lock in — deposit secures the date and we start planning

For large or multi-day activations, we recommend reaching out 6–8 weeks in advance. For smaller team events (up to 50 pax), 3–4 weeks is usually workable.
